Eclipsed

On April 8, 2024, a total solar eclipse was viewable from Georgetown, Texas. HeyThereDlilah and I joined her parents and their neighbors for a viewing party at the posted coordinates. There was food and drink and music and excitement. Then the main event: it was a spectacular experience! I distinctly remember two odd things:

1. As the totality of the eclipse approached, neighborhood streetlights turned on and birds' songs changed. They thought it was night time! It was eerie and cool at the same time.

2. Something fell from the sky! I almost missed it, and I don't know if anyone else saw it because they were all focused on the eclipse. The timing seems very suspicious; I think whatever it is didn't want to be seen. Perhaps you can find it? By the way, I've waited so long to share this information because the object was super hot when I located it. I couldn't get near enough to identify it, but I was able to take some measurements. I'm pretty sure it's cooled down since then, so it's now safe to search. Here's what I noted in my journal that day...

From the posted coordinates, take a bearing of 306.4° at a distance of 715.5 feet. The object bounced off some structure there and continued another 606.6 feet at a bearing of 36.0°.

--

IMPORTANT NOTES:

  • If you decide to do your projections in the field, please don't go at night. The neighbors may find you suspicious. Whatever time you go, be prepared to talk to security about what you're doing. The final is in a public area.
  • There is a checker below if you need it.
  • Please don't post pictures of the container with your log. I want others to have the same fun experience as I hope you do. Happy hunting!

Treewell Hide away

Happy Cold Turkey Day!! 😏😉

We are at my in-laws’ for the rest of the holiday week. My two youngest myrthlings (KrazeeKat09 and Comet_gem) and I took my FIL’s golf cart for a ride while the Mrs. took a much needed nap. Geocaching by golf cart (GC by GC, haha!) is a first for me). Weeeeee!

We really enjoyed this hunt. C_g navigated once we parked. I’m a little slower than the boys are, so by the time I got down, I heard the geocacher’s victory call from C_g: “FOUND IT!” Cool cache, fun spot, and lasting memories. +💚

Giants like me don’t typically enjoy trolls or their dwellings, but even though no one was home, this one was delightfully welcoming.

Agave - Texas Wildflowers\

I enjoyed the business’ sprinklers as I walked to and from GZ. Very refreshing!

As one does, I stuck my head in the branches immediately upon arrival. When I looked from another angle, I saw that I’d missed an active wasp nest by mere inches. Whoa!! I looked a little more and gave up. Before I left though, I found a length of red wire (spent trimmer string I think) and tied it to the branch where the wasps were as a ‼️‼️‼️RED ALERT‼️‼️‼️ to future seekers.

I think TRJ and HS are getting old… I found this in the dark! 😁

In all seriousness, I think I got extremely lucky. Removing the log sheet was a delicate operation, so I retreated to the myrthmobile to have both enough hands and enough light.

Science Fiction Day - National Day

HeyThereDlilah and I had planned to come to the area yesterday to check out a store I learned about Wednesday. Unfortunately, our naps went too late. Apparently, we were tired. Who knew?

We had time today after church. We explored the store, found some treasures, and then grabbed this cache before heading home. When I saw and recognized the container, I exclaimed, “Oh, it’s a banana!” HTD was so confused! 🚫🍌😂

Langham Creek

Langham Creek rises in northern Harris County (at 29°56' N, 95°44' W) in an area where stretches of coastal prairie are interspersed with woodlands of pine and oak. The creek runs southeast for 15½ miles to its mouth on Bear Creek, in the Bear Creek Park area near Addicks Reservoir (at 29°48' N, 95°38' W). The soils of the surrounding region consist of clay and sandy loams. (text from Texas State Historical Association).

The Socialite Challenge!

ZINGO!! pant, pant, pant 😰😰 An unplanned co-{FTF} with GeoGurl61 at 19:40. And what a hunt it was...

After I couldn’t budge the skirt at GZ, I PACO’d for confirmation. I was right. GG arrived, and we tried together and finally got it open. Nada. We checked several LPs in the parking lot. Still nada. Except for a collection of dry rat bones at one 😵‍💫🤢

We PACO’d twice more and interrupted a 60th birthday celebration (thrice now) to confirm the hide style and get some hints. Oh! Wrong coords. Then, with some landmark navigation and lots of sweat equity on this first day of summer, we finally found it. 0.33 mile away. Top that, @BentTandem! 😏

On one inspection, we found a real ___ whose residents had been evicted, so when we found the cache, I jumped. I may have also said a four-letter word or two. Shh…don’t tell anyone! 🤪😂

Despite the unexpected effort, this was a great adventure and will make a great story. And likely a comic 😁

Thank you, CaveatObservator, and happy birthday again. God bless! Ephesians 2:8-9

🛰 Tribute to Armed Forces: Space Force (Bonus)

This is a great memorial space. I learned a lot from the AL and the posted plaques. Thank you to all who have served, are serving, and, especially in light of Monday’s holiday, who have lost a loved one who served. Your sacrifices are not in vain. I had never seen the POW’s prayer until today; I snapped a photo and will add the words to my prayers. This is a favorite: +💚

The log was soaked, but the sun was shining brightly on the nearby metal service box. I laid it out, pressed it flat, and it was dry in minutes or less.

"Are You A Social Butterfly?" Challenge

I checked the tree right at GZ quite thoroughly (from the ground). I even PAF’d a friend to see if I needed to climb. He said he remembered being on his tippy toes to reach it, so it must be at my waist. His words, not mine! Unfortunately, it was I who came up short today 😏😉😁

It appears that several branches of said tree have been cut, perhaps since the last find. Can the CO check please?

Thanks!

Belted Galloway

The nearby cows claim to have an issue with many of our fast food restaurants. I've always wondered about this; I mean, Holsteins are dairy cows. What do they have to worry about!? One breed I know a little about that has a legitimate beef is the Belted Galloway. This breed of beef cattle was first developed in Scotland and has distinctive markings that gave rise to the nickname "Oreo Cow" (perhaps Holsteins would be their friends because, well, you know).
When I was growing up, my late grandfather raised "Belties" on his farm in northern Arkansas. I have fond memories of helping out when visiting for Christmas or Easter. Grandpa's first bull, King David, passed on a rare gene that resulted in reddish fur where it's usually dark brown or black. Within a decade, Grandpa's whole herd was of the red variety.
This cache is a micro with a log only. Please BYOP. The difficulty is higher than you'd usually expect because of high muggle activity, especially around meal times. Have fun and happy caching!

Zebra Zigns

HeyThereDlilah and I are returning to Houston after attending the funeral of one of my favorite high school teachers.

Between caches and stops, we’re brainstorming/outlining a story (maybe a novel?) in the horror/romance genre. With this material on our minds, we both found the sign nearby very creepy. I’m glad it’s daytime!

We had a heck of a time getting the container open. We both tried individually. We tried together. It would not budge. But I want this find. Bad.

Then inspiration struck! I used the myrthmobile in a way I never thought I would. With the square bit of the container wedged between the hood and frame, I finally had enough grip to get it moving. Eureka! Top that, MacGyver!

NALPC -Hanging around Weisser

I came home from work today knowing I have to be back at 3:30 AM. I mowed the yard, ate dinner, and went to bed. I struggled to fall asleep. When my alarm went off at 10:00, I initially dismissed it and then its title sank in: “GC?” OH NO!! With my goal of a year-long streak being accomplished in just two weeks, I would’ve had a very bad day if I didn’t realize until tomorrow that I hadn’t gotten my daily cache. Phew! Close one.

Uptown Immunity Test

I don’t need a test. I am most definitely NOT immune. PI is such a nemesis in fact, that I created a villainous, magical monster named Urushio in a superhero setting in which I sometimes write (attached is an image I made with MS Copilot).

That in mind I poked around with my trusty go-go-Gadget grabber until it broke. Not so trusty after all. Welp, not putting my hands in there! Perhaps another time.
